A safe, inclusive space for comprehensive sexuality and reproductive health education
HtaWaRa is a community platform designed to make conversations about sexuality, sexual health, and reproductive wellness feel trusted, dignified, and shame-free. The platform connects young adults with expert educators and peers in a carefully moderated environment.
The Challenge: Building trust in sensitive conversations
Sexuality education apps often feel awkward or clinical. Young adults need real, judgement-free information but don't want to feel like they're being lectured. The design challenge was to create an app that:
- Feels approachable, not clinical — Warm and human, not sterile
- Prioritizes psychological safety — Robust moderation, clear boundaries, control over exposure
- Respects cultural context — Localized content for Southeast Asian audiences
- Encourages peer learning — Expert-vetted community Q&A threads
- Normalizes the conversation — Beautiful, matter-of-fact design language
My Approach: Trauma-informed UX + community design
01 Psychological safety first — Every interaction was designed with user autonomy and control in mind. Users set visibility preferences, can pause notifications, and can curate their feed.
02 Expert moderation system — Clear visual distinction between expert responses, peer responses, and moderator guidance. Questions get routed to appropriate experts; peer responses are vetted.
03 Warm, normalized visual language — Color palette uses warm peachs and sage greens, not clinical blues. Illustration style shows real, diverse bodies and faces. Language is conversational, not textbook.
04 Category-based navigation — Clear pathways for different topics (contraception, STI testing, sexual wellness, relationships, etc.) with expert primers for each.
05 Community features with guardrails — Peer Q&A allows real stories but with expert oversight. Discussion threads have clear topic focus to prevent harassment.
Design Principles
Inclusivity — All body types, identities, and expressions represented. Gender-neutral language defaults. Accessible for colorblind users.
Destigmatization — Beautiful, matter-of-fact design that normalizes that everyone has questions about sexuality.
Trust — Clear about who reviews content, how data is kept private, and why certain moderation decisions are made.
